Each spring the merchants, neighborhood residents and City of Phoenix join together to put on an annual street fair. The most recent event, held on March 24, 2007 from 3:00 to 9:00PM, was the fourth consecutive event celebrating the revitalization of the area and the sixth event produced in partnership by SAMA and the City of Phoenix. The event is slowly being expanded each year with a goal of showcasing the area to outside spectators in hopes of drawing additional people to the area as it becomes a destination commercial neighborhood. Attendance at the most recent event was estimated between 5,000 and 7,000 people!
These annual events began in May 2004 when SAMA members endorsed the idea based on the overwhelming positive response to two prior “GAIN” (Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods) events that were geared to bring the merchants and neighbors together and to celebrate their achievements in taking back the area from the unsavory elements and stopping the downward trend the community had been experiencing. In 2005 the event included a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the completion of the first phase of street improvements that were funded by a variety of grants though public and private partnerships. Each year the event has grown with the active support of SAMA members, surrounding neighborhood leaders and the City of Phoenix. Hope we see you at the next event – it is sure to be bigger and better as we continue to grow.
